Hussein Janmohamed, a dynamic choral conductor, composer, and community music educator, shares his experience bringing together global sound into a unified musical experience. Hear how voices and sounds can join together in unison to build community, inspire social cohesion, and set us on a path towards pluralism and ongoing understanding.
Hussein Janmohamed is a Toronto-based collaborative choral performer, composer, speaker, and music facilitator. A TEDx speaker, Hussein explores the sonic intersections between faith, culture, and community in a plural Canada through music. Hussein founded the Awaaz Ensemble, a cross-cultural a cappella choral ensemble dedicated to cultural conversation and collaboration. As a doctoral student in Music Education at the University of Toronto, he takes up research to understand how musical expression serves as a pathway for collaboratively produced knowledge within a diverse global context. Hussein’s music compositions yearn for interconnection and conversation, weaving Muslim devotional expression with contemporary choral textures. His choral works continue to be championed by choirs in North America and abroad. Hussein has performed with award winning choirs including the Elmer Iseler Singers, Phoenix Chamber Choir, and Chor Leoni. Hussein has been recognized for his inspirational leadership and community building and continues to serve a vision for unity, peace, and harmony through music. Most recently, Hussein was invited to lead two global Ismaili music ensembles to commemorate the 80th birthday and Diamond Jubilee of His Highness the Aga Khan.
