No experience is required in this weekend workshop led by artist Kelley Aitken using gouache, a traditional water-based medium. By learning how to mix and apply paint, create borders and forms, you will develop the skills to paint your own marvellous creature!
Using the traditional water-based medium of gouache (like watercolour but opaque), you will take inspiration from Marvellous Creatures: Animals in Islamic Art and the manuscript paintings in the Permanent Collection to produce your own designs incorporating animal forms. Through a series of drawing and painting exercises (paint mixing and application, layering, colour mixing, brush strokes as forms, decorative borders), you will develop our composition and learn the techniques of gouache. No experience required, just enthusiasm! All materials provided.
