Often used to solely describe Western traditions, the term "classical music" is re-examined within the context of cultural diversity in this special series of performances. Our Classical Music Series presents the sights and sounds of North Indian, Indonesian, Italian, and Syrian musical traditions. Redefine your understanding of classical music through performances that explore melodic scales, historical recordings, and new interpretations of Western repertoire.
Explore the sophisticated melodic concepts, rhythmic structures, and formal architectures of the Hindustani music tradition in this unique lecture-demonstration. Warren Senders (vocals), Raya Bidaye (harmonium), and Ravi Naimpally (tabla) reveal the “hidden dimensions” of classical music through live performance, archival recordings, and opportunities for you to participate!
Warren Senders is a Hindustani classical singer, musical systems theorist, and environmental activist. He began studying Hindustani vocal music in 1977, and, since 1991, has performed professionally across India, Europe, and North America. Warren’s singing is an engaging synthesis of various gharana traditions, including those of the Gwalior-Jaipur gharanas in which Senders was extensively trained.
